Summer Hours

School's out, so MonkeySquirrel will be on a summer-
occasional-photo-blog-schedule. I was so lazy the last few days. It took me almost a week just to get our last Netflix in the mail. But summer is here, and big plans are in place. Today, for example, I was supposed to buy guitar strings and go to a rodeo, but I took two Benadryl for this terrible hay-fever season and I forgot they knock you out. But now I'm awake, and it's time to get to work enjoying the work free season.

The movie that sat around was Old Joy, something I got just because it has Will Oldham in a starring role and a soundtrack by Yo La Tengo. A very quiet, pretty thing, this movie. Kind of a Raymond Carver or Ann Beattie simplicity on the surface. I just can't decide if it has as much beyond the surface. Anyways, have a nice summer.

Yeah, I can't really say I cared for the film that much. But YO LA TENGO certainly has been on a role as far as scoring goes. SHORTBUS, OLD JOY, and JUNEBUG...

Man, JUNEBUG. I have such a crush on Amy Adams in that movie...

I've decided that being a teacher would rock, because honestly I don't know what I would do without summer break. So far it seems like it will be a fun one, hope yours is too! Don't let the hay fever get you down. :-)

boy, can you imagine how little would get done if summer break was a national holiday? we would be like mexico which has nationally supported siesta every day! Wouldn't that be nice...?

have you randomly seen will oldham anywhere recently? i think you told our class about seeing him once on his bike so you chased him down to see if it was him.

Calypso, teaching is so great. Even in the age of standards and testing, you have so much control over your day to day life when you're teaching.

For example, I happen to be a math teacher. That is why my room is in the math hallway: they think I teach math every day. But I don't like math. I don't know anything about it, in fact. I want to read Jane Austen and write funny stories, so that is what I make my classes do, too. I just close my door, and they have no idea that I'm not teaching math. My students actually think I am an English teacher--how great is that?

So yes, teaching is great.

mbh, I was just thinking about my random encounter with Will Oldham #2 the other day. That was one of the weirder coincidences in my life. I'm driving through Louisville, I think "hey, I wonder if I'll see Will Oldham?" and literally five minutes later I am at a stoplight when he rides by me on a beat up yellow ten speed. I think I'll never catch up to him but then I see his bike at a burrito shot and I pull the car over, find him, and say "did anyone tell you you look like Will Oldham?" and he says "yeah, my mother." He was so nice.

Random encounter #1 was in the D.C. airport when I pointed out a scruffy looking guy to my wife and said "Check out that guy--he looks like Will Oldham." And she says "It is!! Hey Will!!" and it was. He asked her about the Russell Banks novel she was reading and she got nervous and forgot everything about it. A hick near us saw us making a fuss and said to him "Hey, you must be famous--hey, I know--you're Art Garfunkel."

Because things happen in threes, I can't wait for random encounter #3. I hope I have my guitar with me so we can play a song together or something.
